True story. One of my co-workers used to drive into work in his Focus ST during the winter. With the stock summer tires.
It was not pretty.

Where do you live? I can understand getting caught in summer shoes down south, but if he lives anywhere north of DC, he's out of his mind.

Your co-worker is a moron. And I say this as a guy who winter drives an Abarth in Vermont.
I'm amazed that winter tires aren't required by law in northern states, the way they are in Quebec. It's just incredibly dangerous to be driving in snow, ice and cold on three-season tires.

Correction, he was a moron. He recently got a beater Jeep and now drives that in the winter.

Excellent. Some folks just have to learn by doing.

I'm on winter #2 in southeastern PA in an E90 M3 on pilot super sports. Granted this winter has been much milder than the last but I have been fine. Last winter I got stuck once, but I was able to make it into a parking lot and I just did some snow drifts until the plow trucks had been around. On one other occasion I had to get picked up from work because I couldn't get out of my parking spot lol. However, if I crashed I would be kicking myself for being sooo stupid.

it's not just precipitation that affects summer tires. most don't have effective grip in cold weather. I've read enough horror stories to put all-season tires on my 996 once the temperatures start to drop.
